THE BATTERY PEOPLE
1) 30 seconds
Chicken production line. A tiny part of this is in the UK Gold edit. We see on a conveyor system dead chickens being plunged into water and having their feathers removed, and then their feet snipped off by a man holding cleavers. So we see the journey of the chicken from animal to what we see in the shops. Music backs this. This leads into Ridge entering Smithson's office.
I'm not sure if the cock fighting scene was edited in any way, I don't think it was. Although we see blood splatter, it's not terribly graphic.
2) 15 seconds
The Minister having said 'We must confront Colonel Smithson!' spends a bit more time putting on his hat and coat and times it to some dialogue. I didn't restore this bit, not noticing first time round but the dialogue was along the lines of 'We shall see what we shall see.' This leads straight into the next cut scene.
3) 2 minutes thirty seconds
SMITHSON TAKES QUIST AND THE MINISTER INTO THE OFFICE.
SMITHSON: Good of you to spare the time, minister. Bit of a tight schedule.
MINISTER: Yes, I haven't much time. Now I don't think you know Doctor Quist.
SMITHSON: no, but the name-
QUIST: I work for the Ministry.
SMITHSON: Er,doctor of...
QUIST: Not medicine. My doctoral thesis was on the topology of the renum space.
SMITHSON: Whatever that may mean.
QUIST: You're not entirely unversed in science, are you Colonel? You did have contact at a weapon research station in Gline?
SMITHSON: I guarded it. Now won't you sit down?
MINISTER: No time.
SMITHSON: Now what went on inside I knew nothing about. I wouldn't have understood it anyway.
QUIST: Not even a rather clumsy technique for inhibiting the development of bone structure in
vertebrates?
SMITHSON: I don't know what you're talking about. Now, how about a drink, gentlemen?
MINISTER: Colonel, can we get down to brass tacks? Is there any hazard to health in this plant of yours?
SMITHSON: Certainly not. Who says there is?
MINISTER: No one says so yet. It is simply a question.
SMITHSON: And a damned insulting one. There has never been a hint of malpractice. And I resent the suggestion that there has been!
QUIST: Do you ever touch the product, Colonel?
SMITHSON: I eat it all the time. I ignore the chicken but thank heaven the great British public didn't but fish - our latest product I practically live on it.
QUIST: Let me slightly re-phrase the question. When the product is, em, growing, do you touch it?
SMITHSON: (AMUSED) I am managing director, remember. I employ men to do the routine tasks.
QUIST: Which involves touching the product.
SMITHSON: Well of course it does. Birds have to be inoculated, transported from incubator to broiler house, beaks have to be clipped. It's highly automated but a great many things have to be done by hand.
QUIST: Including the slaughtering.
SMITHSON: Yes, that too. (BEAT) I don't understand you.
QUIST: Are you sure?
SMITHSON: Minister, what kind of inquisition is this?
QUIST: It's into the state of mind of a man who subjects his workers into great health hazards.
SMITHSON: Look, if you're a boffin, if you've found something, even if it's a hair brained theory, you should tell me.
QUIST: I think you know already. Anyway, there's a simple test. Let's go outside. Let me see you handle some of your stock.
SMITHSON: Certainly.
QUIST: The fish?
SMITHSON: (NERVOUS) The process is still experimental... still secret.
QUIST: It was secret at Glyne weapon research station too wasn't it? (LOOKS AT THE MINISTER) Shall we go?
THEY HEAD FOR THE DOOR
This leads into the party entering the fish farm.
