I've heard that some fans dismiss the film but I love it. It reminds me of 'The Wicker Man' : remote scottish island with locals hiding a grim secret. All the main cast give good performances.

Watched this again fairly recently and it does stand up surprisingly well - a shame it's often compared unfavourably with the TV series, but as a standalone feature there's a lot to admire.
I know that one of the criticisms frequently levelled at the film is that it re-treads old ground as far as it's TV counrterpart is concerned. Exton's scripts clearly draws heavily, for example, on ''Burial At Sea'' and there are elements of ''The Islanders" (ironically there's also a key role for Shelagh Fraser, who also appeared in the latter episode).
Its all done with a certain flair though and Peter Sasdy's direction is well up to his usual standard (always a good eye for composition, although the pacing may seem ponderous to some by todays standards). And I just love that understated downbeat ending, which would probably have seemed such a cop-out for those looking for a more visceral blood-and-guts denouement!
The trailer included on the R2 DVD is a real child of it's time, with a suitably dramatic voiceover by Patrick Allen - worth the price of the disc alone!

I only watched this the once - and that was enough. Beautifully shot, but the problem for me was quite simply, I wanted to see the Doomwatch team at it, not this sodding interloper who everyone seemed to kow tow to. Poor old Fay and Ridge seem to take a back seat, and just how big was that Doomwatch lab?
Perhaps after twenty odd years I should forgive it and cuddle it - at least it takes some of its plot from a missing Spooner story....

A bizarre little film, not bad, rather atmospheric. My problem with it is that is sort of hints that it will lead to suspense and excitement but instead delivers drama in the second half. The scenes with the actual 'Doomwatch' cast in feel like odd cutaways that never quite blend in with things as Michael said. Shame that like the series this has become another forgotten classic.
